7 Days Timau-Chogoria hike

Depart Nairobi at 8.00am and drive to Nanyuki crossing the equator and to the town and arrive at a lodge in time for lunch. Spend the afternoon for an optional acclimatization and visit the Nanyuki village tour, Equator and Old railway terminus or if time allows take the hike to the MauMau cave where the freedom fighters were hiding during Kenya’s struggle for independence.

After breakfast you drive to the School of Adventure, the base of Mt. Kenya trail at 2900m. Here you meet with your guides, cook and porters. After introductions you start the 7 Days Timau-Chogoria hike through a beautiful forest inhabited by a variety of wildlife to arrive Marania Campsite 3600m. in the moorland for dinner and overnigh (5hrs).

After breakfast you continue with your hike through the moorland covered by high altitude vegetation like Senecio and Lobelia with a Lunch break enroute to Major’s Camp (4000m)

After breakfast, you take the trek traversing the alpine desert over the col. 4,600m. with the scenic views of the valleys, Terere and Sendeo peaks and then walk down to Shiptons Camp 4,200m. at the head of the Mackinders Valley for dinner and overnight with the main peaks, Lenana, Batian and Nelion towering above. 6-7 hrs.

After breakfast, you will follow the trail leading to Kami camp below the north face of Batian. Continuing West- Southwest the trails climbs up switchbacks in the fine snow before reaching Hausberg Col at 4600m. We will descend into the upper Hausberg valley and rest at the oblong and Hausberg tarns and the hike back to Shipton camp for dinner and overnight.

This will be the longest day on the trip. Take an early morning tea and at around 02.30 am start the climbing along a lose scree which sometimes of the year is covered with snow to reach the summit of Peak Lenana (4,985M) (3hrs) the third peak in Mt. Kenya to catch the sunrise. After a superb view from the summit as far as Mt. Kilimanjaro to the south, descend to Mintos camp (3hrs) to the Eastern side of the peaks where you will meet with your cook and porters for breakfast. After the breakfast, descend through a scenic trail on Chogoria route viewing the fascinating Gorges Valley to Lake Ellis campsite 3,400m for dinner and overnight in tents. (6hrs). Lunch served enroute. (Total 12+ hrs).

After breakfast, descend for 2hrs to the Chogoria park gate and meet the transfer vehicle off the mountain driving through the rain forest to Chogoria village where you drop the crews and then you drive back to Nairobi and the porters proceed back to Nanyuki arriving in the evening ending your 7 Days Timau-Chogoria hike.
